Job Opportunity: Stud and Livestock Operations

Karawatha Park is a progressive, family owned and managed cropping, livestock and poll merino stud operation located in Kimba on the Eyre Peninsula, South Australia.

Our business currently operates on about 10,000ha over 6 properties surrounding Kimba over a variety of soil types and rainfall. The cropping program consists of wheat, barley and export oaten hay. The business runs approximately 5000 head of sheep, depending on the season, and we sell between 250-550 rams annually. We readily adopt new technology, infrastructure and ideas to make the operation more efficient, sustainable, enjoyable, and environmentally responsible. We are a close-knit team, and our main focus is on family, relationships, and enjoyment of our time.

A full time farm operations position has become available for an enthusiastic, driven individual with a passion for farming. If you have experience, that will be a great help great, but we value a good attitude and can help with the experience part! We are not perfect, nor do we expect you to be, but we do aspire to be as good as we can be, and that is what we will expect of you.

The position will be an integral part of the Karawatha Park team, working with the current management team and other staff to improve and build the sheep and/or cropping programs.

This role has the potential to develop as far as you have the skills and the will to take it. We are flexible in what the position will entail, and believe in people doing what they enjoy and what they are good at. It’s also important for you to continually grow and learn, so trying new things will be encouraged. There’s plenty going on, so there is scope for plenty of variation in your week.

The jobs may include some or all of those listed below:

  • Operation of machinery including seeders, spreader, sprayer, spader, telehandler, grader, loader, bale stacker, rollers, chaser bin and header.
  • Maintain and repair farm equipment, infrastructure and machinery.
  • General fence and water system planning, building and maintenance, including grading of water runs and internal road network.
  • Transport of hay, grain and livestock around the farm or to receival point. Single, rigid or road train.
  • Animal husbandry including but not limited to internal stock movement, monitoring, induction, exiting, sorting, classing, marking, shearing, and supervising animal health and welfare.
  • Monitor animal nutrition with reference to current pastures and required supplementary feeding.
  • Induct, operate and monitor the on property confinement feeding facility throughout the autumn feed gap, and other times of low soil cover.
  • Learn to operate and maintain sheep record keeping software (BreedElite), as well as proficiently operate the autodrafter (Smart Draft’n’Weigh)
  • Collection of relevant data at relevant growth stage and timely submission to MerinoSelect for ASBV’s.

Your role can be either livestock focussed, or grain focussed, or a bit of both. There will inevitably be some overlap but there is plenty of work to keep you engaged wherever your passion and skills fit.

The position will ideally be full time, after a probationary casual period of three months. We can help with finding a place to live if you don’t already live here. Salary package will be competitive, based on your skills and experience, with potential for a work vehicle provided. Like most things in life, these things are negotiable.
